Rabies antibody testing

Rabies antibody testing of dogs and cats

We have conducted rabies antibody tests according to Import and Export Quarantine regulations for dogs and others (No. 68 of Ordinance of the Ministry of Agriculture, 1999).

RIAS is the only testing laboratory currently designated in Japan. RIAS conducts the fluorescent antibody virus neutralization test, which is one of the methods recommended by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE).

We are happy to accept requests for testing from abroad as well as inside Japan.

Further information for submission including the price of the test is as below. We look forward to receiving your samples.

Our Institute has been designated by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as a laboratory to conduct rabies antibody tests based according to Import and Export Quarantine regulations for dogs and others (No. 68 of the Ordinance of the Ministry of Agriculture, 1999), and it is the only test facility that has been assignment to do so at the moment in Japan.

  • How to Send Serum

Please read and follow the instructions below carefully for submission of serum samples to the Research Institute for Animal Science in Biochemistry & Toxicology (RIAS) for the rabies antibody test. If you have any enquiries, please contact Mr. Nakamura at RIAS.

    1. Please send a minimum of 1 ml of refrigerated or frozen serum.
NOTE: We recommend vaccination and time of blood sampling as follows to obtain an antibody titer of more than 0.5IU/ml.
      (1) Vaccinate twice with an interval of over 30 days between.
      (2) Take a blood sample between 7-14 days after the 2nd vaccination.
Serum samples should be sent refrigerated or frozen in order to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. If a refrigerated courier service is very expensive or not available in your country, we recommend that you carry out the following procedures.First, freeze the serum sample(s) when you receive it from the veterinarian. Then, pack the frozen serum together with a frozen ice-pack, and send this package at normal temperature using a standard international postal service. If the serum is sent this way, it will arrive in good condition.
    2. Please label each serum sample with the animal’s microchip number.
    3. All the serum samples should be sent in triple packaging (primary receptacle, secondary packaging and outer packaging for transport).
    4. In case of dog serum, please send a veterinary certification and endorsement by official veterinarian with serum sample, in which mentioned that dog has been found to be free from any clinical signs of rabies and leptospirosis. Please download a certification form from website of the Animal Quarantine Service. (Other regions, Recommended certification form for dog serum)http://www.maff.go.jp/aqs/english/animal/dog/import-other.html
