Rabies antibody test for dogs and cats
The Research Institute for Animal Science in Biochemistry & Toxicology (RIAS), originally established in 1974, is a foundation under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). RIAS conducts various tests on animal and fishery products including physical and chemical analysis, bacteriological analysis and gene diagnosis, as well as various tests of animal drugs.
Recently, RIAS has been designated as a laboratory for conducting the rabies antibody test by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries under Provisions for Import and Export Quarantine of Specified Animals (Ordinance No.68 of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 1999).
RIAS is the only testing laboratory currently designated in Japan. RIAS conducts the fluorescent antibody virus neutralization test, which is one of the methods recommended by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE).
